Parapat ( Lake Toba )
The
town of Parapat is situated in a large bay of the Lake Toba. Parapat is one of
North Sumatera’s foremost tourist attractions
and can be
reached in just over 3 hours by road from
Berastagi. From here, watch the beautiful colours of the sunset with a
beautiful postcard shot of the lake in the foreground. There is a wide range of
recreational
activities at the lake such as swimming, fishing, paddling, watercycling,
cruising and motor-boating.
Lake
Toba is the largest lake in Southeast Asia with
surface area of
1145 square km. It is also one of the world’s
deepest - with depth of over 450m. The
huge crater lake was formed by a cataclysmic prehistoric volcanic eruption.
At 906m above sea level, the
scenery is simply magnificent and the weather refreshing. In the middle of
the lake
is the famous Samosir Island measuring some 600 square km
(roughly the size of the island state of Singapore). On the island,
tourists can see the traditional village of the Batak
people, visit
the tombs of the ancient kings and browse around for local
hand-made
souvenirs.
